MECHANICAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Michael
This picture shows Michael at the console of the Ex-Gaumont Finchley Compton organ whilst installed at the Plough Inn, Great Munden in Herts.

Mechanical music by definition is music produced by mechanically operated devices and exists in a wide variety of formats from musical boxes to large dance or cafe organs and just about everything in between.

A LIFELONG passion FOR Michael Guiver

The proprietor of The Clockmaker's Workshop, Michael Guiver, has a lifelong passion for clocks, antiques and for mechanical musical instruments. The interest in mechanical music started with an introduction to the pianola - a self playing piano - at an early age whilst still at school.

Michael also has a keen interest in Theatre pipe organs or Cinema organs that were used to accompany silent films in cinemas in the 1920s and like so many things of long ago seem to be appreciated much more now they are scarce - Michael is keen to see that these and other instruments are preserved and maintained for future generations - he is actively involved as a volunteer at St Albans Organ Theatre where a collection of Organs, mechanical musical instruments and two Theatre organs can be found.

St Albans Organ Theatre

At The Clockmaker's Workshop we are pleased to be associated with St Albans Organ Theatre - a fascinating collection of mechanical musical instruments collected by the late Charles Hart in the 1960s and preserved for our enjoyment at St Albans Organ Theatre.
If you have an interest or a passion for mechanical music or would like to hear the large dance organs playing, watch a reproducing player piano in action, listen to and enjoy the Mills Violano Virtuoso (piano and violin duet), or thrill to the sounds of The Mighty Wurlitzer - why not pay a visit to:

The St Albans Organ Theatre,
320 Camp Rd,
St Albans,
AL1 5PE

On one of the Sunday openings - you would be welcomed by an informal friendly team of volunteers dedicated to their work and would be provided with a memorable afternoon of entertainment and light refreshments.
